Adebayor on fire as Arsenal defeat City

Emmanuel Adebayor struck twice as Arsenal beat Manchester City 2-0 at Emirates Stadium.

The Togo striker - who had been out since February, but scored for his country while on World Cup qualifying duty - nodded in a free-kick from fit-again captain Cesc Fabregas after seven minutes.

Adebayor added another at the start of the second half as City - who were forced into a couple of changes by injury - never really got going.

City were the last team to beat Wenger's men back in late November, but they were very much second best.

Arsenal went ahead after seven minutes, taking advantage of a free-kick on the right which was awarded when Robinho bundled over Bacary Sagna.

Fabregas' delivery to the penalty spot was inch-perfect for Adebayor, who powered a header back into the bottom corner for his 13th goal of the season.

The Gunners continued to press and defender Kolo Toure drew a save from Shay Given before City's Micah Richards charged up field and drove in a low, angled shot which was kept out by the legs of Manuel Almunia.

It should then have been 1-1 when Wright-Phillips slipped in Gelson Fernandes but his shot struck the outside of the post.

Adebayor made it 2-0 at the start of the second half when he met a superb chipped pass from Fabregas and passed the ball beyond Given.

Perhaps with one eye on the Champions League quarter-final first leg away to Villarreal, Arsene Wenger made a change after 70 minutes as Nicklas Bendtner replaced Adebayor and Emmanuel Eboue came on for Theo Walcott. Fabregas was given a rest when he was replaced by Aaron Ramsey - leaving the field to a standing ovation.
