After Spurs, Fernandes next - Moyes

Everton manager David Moyes is closing in on Portugal midfielder Manuel Fernandes as he attempts to increase the competition in his table-topping side.

Defeating Tottenham 3-1 sent Everton top of the Premier League - for 24 hours at least - and it may be difficult for any newcomer to break into the team after their performance at White Hart Lane.

But Moyes, who wants to bolster his squad before the transfer window is shut, said: "That's what I need, competition to keep those players on their toes. The players have asked for the competition, I'm hoping to get it, and I'm hoping to make it even stronger again if I can."

Fernandes, who was on loan at Goodison last season, did not feature for Benfica on Tuesday night in their Champions League qualifier against FC Copenhagen, meaning he will be eligible for Everton's UEFA Cup campaign.

"As far as I know, Benfica have accepted our bid," said Moyes.

Benfica only own 50% of the player but Everton are reported to be confident there would be no problems over third-party influence if he eventually signs.

Moyes did not start any of his summer signings against Spurs, keeping the same team that defeated Wigan on the opening day of the season.

Joleon Lescott opened the scoring with a header in the second minute, although he was at fault when Anthony Gardner levelled matters later in the first half.

In a thrilling opening period, Leon Osman kept his cool to edge Everton ahead again, and Alan Stubbs' free-kick took a wicked deflection off Didier Zokora to establish a two-goal cushion.

Tottenham's £40million strikeforce was kept quiet, a remarkable effort given that Joseph Yobo was playing through the pain barrier after picking up an early groin strain.
