West Indian Gibson, 38, enjoyed a remarkable season with LV County Championship runners-up Durham - taking 80 Division One wickets, including all 10 in an innings against Hampshire at the Riverside.

He also helped the north-east county to two one-day titles - the Friends Provident Trophy and NatWest Pro40 Division Two.

Gibson is also to fill in as England's fast-bowling consultant for the one-day tour of Sri Lanka which begins this week, with Allan Donald unavailable.

The award, won in recent years by England stars Andrew Flintoff (twice), Michael Vaughan and Marcus Trescothick, is voted for by fellow county professionals.

Yorkshire's teenage leg-spinning all-rounder Adil Rashid made it a double for the season in taking the PCA young player-of-the-year award at a dinner in central London, having claimed the prestigious Cricket Writers' young player gong earlier this month.

But it was experience rather than youth which triumphed in the inaugural Hewitt team of the year, based on the rankings system established by the PCA this season.

Joining Gibson in the XI were last year's player of the year Mark Ramprakash, 38, Worcestershire's 41-year-old Graeme Hick, 2003 winner Mushtaq Ahmed, 37 - once again the most prolific bowler in first-class cricket this past summer - Andrew Caddick, 38, and 33-year-old Darren Maddy.

Kent's Robert Key was named captain of the side - with Gibson's county colleague Phil Mustard, who was this week called up by England for the first time, chosen as wicketkeeper.
