Ageless Jayasuriya draws the plaudits
02 January 2007
Jayasuriya struggled to 14 runs from 33 balls in the first 15 overs but then changed gear, racing to his 50 off the next 14 balls and getting to his hundred off another 39. He struck a total of 10 fours and four sixes in his score of 115 - his second century of the tournament.
"There was something in the wicket early on and Sanath's experience showed as he ensured he stayed at the wicket until he could play his normal attacking game," Jayawardene said.
"He is one of the assets on this team and we hope that he will continue to perform in this manner for the rest of the tournament."
Jayasuriya then returned to take three for 38 with his left-arm spin to claim the man-of-the match title as the West Indies were dismissed for 190.
But it was his centtury that most pleased Jayasuriya who described the innings as one of his best ever.
"It is up there among the best because the wicket was not easy early on and I had to be very watchful," he said.
"But I decided that after the 15th over, we needed some runs and I played my normal type of innings."
West Indies captain Brian Lara was very disappointed after his side slumped to a third defeat in three Super Eight encounters.
He said: "Everyone feels the loss. We have to regroup and see how best we can salvage the rest of the tournament. We have to look at this positively. We have lost three matches but we still have three to play and if we can win those games, then we could still find ourselves in with a chance of getting to the semi-finals."
