Ainslie bounces back

Ben Ainslie recovered from a disappointing performance in the opening race of the Finn class at the Olympic sailing regatta, winning the second race on Saturday to move up to third in the overall standings.

The 31-year-old, who is attempting to surpass Rodney Pattison as Britain's most successful Olympic sailor by winning his fourth medal, floundered in the light winds off Qingdao to slip from first to 10th on the final leg in the opening race.

But he bounced back superbly to take the second race, finishing 12 seconds ahead of runner-up Rafal Szukiel of Poland with Canada's Christopher Cook in third place.

Ainslie held a 10-second lead at the final mark in the first race before eventually finishing 61 seconds behind Greece's Aimilios Papathanasiou at the finish.

But the five-time Finn world champion made no mistake in the latter race. He trailed in seventh at the first mark but took the lead on the first leeward leg and held on the rest of the way to finish the first day on 11 points, six behind leader Szukiel, who was third in the opening race.

Zach Railey of the United States, who finished second and fifth in the two races was in second place with seven points while Papathanasiou slipped to 13th after failing to finish the second race.

Meanwhile the British crew of Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson led the field in the Yngling class after finishing third in the second race of the day.

The Team GB trio, who are hot favourites to win the Olympic gold after claiming back-to-back world championships, recovered from a dreadful start in the opening race, coming back from last place at the first mark to finish second behind Australia in the opening race.

They managed another top three finish in the afternoon to finish the day with five points, four ahead of second placed Canada, who finished fifth and fourth respectively.

The second race was dominated by the Netherlands, who finished over a minute ahead of the second-placed United States boat and 77 seconds in front of the British crew.
