Alexander is new Silkmen boss

Macclesfield have appointed Keith Alexander as their new manager after parting company with Ian Brightwell.

Brightwell, and assistant boss Asa Harford, have left the struggling League Two club after a run of five straight league defeats and Alexander will take charge until the end of the season.

Club chairman Mike Rance told the club's official website: "It is no secret that results of late haven't been what we have wanted."

He added: "With other sides picking up points around us in the table we felt a change was needed and in doing so now we wanted to give the new man as much time as possible to make an impact.

"Ian was offered the opportunity to work with Keith as his number two but declined the new role, a decision we understand.

"We would of course like to thank Ian and Asa for their hard work and wish them both well in the future."

The recent poor run leaves Macclesfield just two points above the relegation zone, having played two games more than second-bottom Mansfield.

Alexander, 51, has a wealth of experience at League Two level, steering Lincoln to four consecutive play-off finishes and was recently the director of football at Bury.

His first task will be at home to Notts County in League Two on Saturday.
