All Blacks end campaign with win

New Zealand ended their Tri-Nations campaign with a flourish in Wellington with a comprehensive 33-6 win against Australia.

The result ensured the All Blacks avoided the wooden spoon after relinquishing the trophy to South Africa in Hamilton but it is the convincing manner of the three-tries-to-nil victory that will be heartening for their under fire coaches.

For Australia, the defeat extends their run of losses on New Zealand soil to nine matches which date back to 2001.

After absorbing some early pressure at a packed Westpac Stadium New Zealand took firm control of the match and were 16-6 up by the break.

While they had an early wobble at the line-out overall it showed steady improvement. The scrums were scrappy throughout but the All Blacks looked a far better team for keeping the ball in hand and playing at pace.

Right wing Cory Jane had an outstanding game and fully deserved his try. He was superb under the high ball and looked dangerous every time he got the ball in hand, as did Isaia Toeava.

Number eight Kieran Read was another prominent with ball in hand, while Ma'a Nonu, back at inside centre, ran hard at the Australian defence the whole match and showed his strength to barge over for the All Blacks' second try.

Joe Rokocoko had a busy night as he went looking for work off his wing before rounding off with the final try - on the stroke of full-time - in the corner.

It was not such a good night for Wallabies teenage full-back James O'Connor. He got clattered in a high tackle by Toeava - which earned the All Black a yellow card - and often found himself isolated trying to run himself out of trouble.

In fact, none of the Australians were allowed to shine and they barely ventured into the All Blacks' 22 and when they did they simply could not get past the swarming defence.
