Ambrose prepared to glove up

Tim Ambrose is ready for his premature return to Test cricket as England bid to level the series against the West Indies.

Deputy wicketkeeper Ambrose will be one of at least two changes for the fourth Test due to first-choice gloveman Matt Prior's paternity leave starting at Kensington Oval on Thursday, leaving another hole in a middle-order already lacking injured all-rounder Andrew Flintoff.

Ambrose, who knew upon arrival here he would play at least one Test, said: "Yes it is a bit earlier than I was expecting, but knowing beforehand that I'd be getting a game meant I've been preparing for it and I feel pretty ready for the week ahead."

Ambrose acclimatised with 74 in his first England appearance of the winter, the drawn two-day match against a Barbados Cricket Association President's XI which concluded on Monday.

Tour newcomer Ravi Bopara and Ian Bell - rivals for the number six spot - also scored heavily in the contest, although the latter's second-innings 72 in a score of 142 for two was nothing more than a glorified net against a young home side.

Prior's temporary departure - he is due back for the final Test in Trinidad - significantly lessens the chance of England selecting a five-man attack as he has the batting capability of a top six player.

The tourists would be unlikely to select Ambrose in the same role but he he has a desire to prove he can be a success.

"Like anyone who has been in the England side and had a taste of the top level and then gets left out, you're desperate to get back in," Ambrose added.

"You go away and work on the things you feel you need to improve on to get you back and that is what I've been doing in the time I've had out.

"At my age and at my stage of my career I think there is some unfinished business with England and I'd like to try and push on with that."
