Anderson and Broad claim early wickets

James Anderson and Stuart Broad both claimed a wicket in the first hour as England attempted to claim a stranglehold on the opening npower Test against South Africa.

The tourists resumed the third morning on seven without loss, still 387 runs away from avoiding the follow on after England had declared on 593 for eight.

But their opening stand was broken after just 12 balls this morning, with Lancashire seamer Anderson picking up the wicket of Proteas captain Graeme Smith.

Smith, who had begun the day by clipping left-arm seamer Ryan Sidebottom for an early boundary to fine leg, was squared up by a delivery which bounced and caught the leading edge, and Ian Bell held on to the catch.

It brought Hashim Amla to the crease to join Neil McKenzie, and he was happy to play out a maiden to Sidebottom.

But Amla, who was so impressive in making centuries against Somerset and Middlesex, made just six runs before he was caught by wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose following Broad's delivery, leaving the tourists struggling on 28-2.
