Anderson disrupts Windies momentum

James Anderson applied the brakes on West Indies' early charge in the second NatWest Series contest at Edgbaston.

Lancashire fast bowler Anderson removed opener Devon Smith during a maiden over after the tourists, needing to avoid defeat to maintain an interest in the one-day campaign, charged out of the blocks.

When Chris Gayle fell immediately after hitting his third six, off Ryan Sidebottom, West Indies were 67 for two in the 13th over.

Gayle struck two towering sixes, the first launched over extra-cover off Anderson and the second, deposited over the sightscreen at the pavilion end, resulting in a lost ball.

Typically perhaps England struck with the replacement as Smith, whose powerful cuts were a feature of his short innings, chased a wide one and gained an under-edge through to wicketkeeper Matt Prior.

That brought Shivnarine Chanderpaul to the crease, having been shunted up the order from number five due to his mountain of runs on the tour to date.

Sidebottom returned to the side after being ruled out of the campaign opener due to a viral infection, replacing Liam Plunkett in one of two changes.

But he made an inauspicious start as his first delivery slid off down the leg-side for five wides.

Plunkett may have felt unfortunate after his improved display at Lord's while Monty Panesar was also axed.

Left-arm spinner Panesar was left out with the wet conditions likely to suit seam bowling, so England opted for their other slow bowler Michael Yardy, whose superior batting ability adds depth to the lower order.
