Opener Phil Hughes got Australia off and running by carving Anderson through the covers for the first boundary in the third over. But just two balls later the Lancashire man claimed his revenge with a short delivery down the leg-side which Hughes tried to pull and was caught by wicketkeeper Matt Prior after the ball brushed the glove.

And four overs later Ricky Ponting was gone as umpire Rudi Koertzen judged he had got an inside edge onto his pads before the ball carried to Andrew Strauss at slip to leave the tourists 10 for two.

Ponting was unhappy with the decision and, although replays suggested there was no contact with the bat, England would have had a strong claim for a leg before decision with a direct hit on the pads.
