Anderson stunts New Zealand fightback

Jimmy Anderson made amends for an expensive opening spell to claim a pivotal catch as New Zealand attempted to overhaul England's daunting total in today's crucial fourth one-day international.

England's 340 for six, their third highest one-day international total in history, established them as firm favourites to win today's encounter at McLean Park and set up a series decider in Christchurch on Saturday.

But openers Jessie Ryder and Brendon McCullum set off impressively and forged a 70-run stand in the opening 10 overs before Anderson claimed his catch in the deep as New Zealand reached 97 for one after 15 overs of their reply.

Ryder, brought up locally, had progressed to an impressive 39 off 32 balls including three fours and two sixes when he attempted to drive Stuart Broad down the ground and instead mis-cued to deep extra cover and allowed Anderson to run around and claim the catch.

Anderson had earlier been hammered for 44 runs in his first four overs, although he did hamper wicketkeeper McCullum by hitting his right hand for which he needed treatment.

England's massive total was built by a consistent display from the top five with openers Alastair Cook and Phil Mustard laying the platform with a 158-run stand while captain Paul Collingwood propelled them beyond 300 with the quickest ever one-day half-century by an England player.

Collingwood reached the landmark off just 24 balls, beating the previous record of 28 balls set by Andrew Flintoff against Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge in 2002, and helped add 101 runs in the final 10 overs. His efforts helped England to their third highest in history and their biggest since recording 391 for four against Bangladesh at Trent Bridge in 2002, their highest ever total.

All England's top five batsman scored 40 or more while Luke Wright pitched in with a quickfire 24 off 13 balls at the end which enabled the tourists to add 101 runs off the final 10 overs with Collingwood finishing unbeaten on 54 off only 30 balls.

Collingwood took a particular liking to the main stand at McLean Park and pulled five sixes into it, including one which hit the roof and rebounded back onto the playing area.
