Appealing news for England

England's Test series against West Indies this winter will use the umpire decision review system.

The system - trialled during the recent series between India and Sri Lanka - allows a side up to three appeals against a decision per innings.

The International Cricket Council confirmed on Tuesday afternoon it will be implemented during England's four Test matches in the Caribbean in February and March 2009.

The decision was made by ICC board members on the first day of their two-day meeting in Dubai.

Another three series - New Zealand v West Indies, India v Pakistan and South Africa v Australia - will also trial the system before the ICC's cricket committee meets in May.

The ICC board also considered an application from the controversial Indian Cricket League, seeking approval for their competition, at Tuesday's sitting.

A decision was adjourned pending further discussions between Shashank Manohar, president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, and ICL officials.

The ICC have previously refused to grant the Twenty20 ICL competition official status, which has been enjoyed by the successful and lucrative Indian Premier League.

Players involved in the ICL have been subject to heavy sanctions from governing bodies around the world, and Kent were not invited to take part in the inaugural Champions League tournament due to their links with participants, despite finishing runners-up in the domestic Twenty20 Cup.
