Arteta scoops Toffees award

Mikel Arteta was on Tuesday night named Everton's player of the year, voted for by fans worldwide on the club's official website.

It is the the second season in succession the Spanish midfielder has scooped the prize and, with negotiations about to start on his new contract, he said: "It is really nice to win the award again, and I feel tremendously close to the people of this city and the club. I feel comfortable here and enjoy my football."

Boss David Moyes has constantly championed the uncapped Arteta to be included in the Spain squad and the Basque star added: "Obviously, that is my dream. I will have to keep working and keep improving and hopefully one day I will get my chance."

The players' player of the year was defender Joleon Lescott after his first full season at the club.

Boss Moyes said: "The biggest compliment you can pay him is that he has never looked out of place once, and having to play at left-back for so long has just underlined that."

"He did not have the opportunity before of playing at this level, having helped Wolves to promotion, but Joleon is certainly a Premier League player now and would not be out of place in the England squad."

Teenager James Vaughan won the young player of the year award and the shareholders' young player award.

The result of the voting was announced at the club's end-of-season awards dinner at St George's Hall in Liverpool city centre.
