Ashton set to be retained

Brian Ashton is set to be retained as England's head coach when Rob Andrew delivers his World Cup review at Twickenham on Wednesday.

Ashton's current contract expires on December 31 - and despite leading England to the World Cup final, his future was up in the air following the tournament.

The RFU would not commit themselves to keeping Ashton in place until after Andrew, the Rugby Football Union's elite rugby director, had conducted a thorough post-World Cup review.

Senior players Lawrence Dallaglio and Mike Catt were both critical of his leadership in books published immediately after the World Cup.

Andrew will address the management board at Twickenham - having consulted the players, England's management staff and coaches from around the Guinness Premiership.

RFU chairman Martyn Thomas said: "This is obviously a significant meeting - because we get Rob Andrew's report on the World Cup and his thoughts as to what we should be doing, going forward."

It is understood the report will recommend keeping Ashton on board as coach, and there are not likely to be wholesale changes to the coaching structure.

That would mean forwards coach John Wells and defence specialist Mike Ford also being offered new contracts.

There could, however, be additions to the management team, and Graham Rowntree has been tipped for a bigger role after making an immediate impact as England's scrummaging coach at the World Cup.
