Aussie FA: Our priority is A-League

Football Federation Australia boss Ben Buckley has shown only lukewarm interest following revelations that English Premier League matches could be played in Australia in the future.

The 20 Premier League clubs have unanimously agreed to further investigate the plan which would see one round of matches each season played overseas from January 2011, with Australia one of the countries where matches could potentially be played.

FFA chief executive Buckley said: "FFA's overwhelming priority is to promote the Hyundai A-League and to continue to invest in, and grow, the game in Australia."

The plan, which Premier League chief Richard Scudamore says will take at least a year to finalise, would involve the 10 matches from one round each season being played across five cities outside England.

"We have not voted to do it or how it will be done, we have voted to examine the proposal," said Scudamore.

"We are excited about it. The clubs are excited about it."

With so many Australians playing in the Premier League and lower leagues in England, and the interest in the world game at an all-time high in Australia, any match or matches played Down Under involving Premier League teams would almost certainly be sell-outs.

Nearly 51,000 fans attended the Socceroos' opening 2010 World Cup qualifier against Qatar at Melbourne's Telstra Dome earlier this week, while more than 80,000 were on hand in November 2005 when Australia beat Uruguay on penalties to qualify for Germany 2006.
