Aussies equal record after late show

Australia equalled their own world record of 16 consecutive Test wins after a stunning 122-run victory against India in Sydney.

Home captain Ricky Ponting gave his bowlers 72 overs to knock over the Indians in their second innings and they did so with part-time bowler Michael Clarke snapping up the last three in an enthralling finish.

There were just eight minutes remaining when Ishant Sharma edged a Clarke delivery to Mike Hussey to end the game and ensure the hosts moved 2-0 up in the best-of-four Test series.

Hussey made an unbeaten 145 earlier in the day while Andrew Symonds chipped in with 61.

Ponting eventually declared with his side on 401 for seven, leaving India with little chance of winning and needing to bat out the remainder of the day to salvage a draw.

They got off to a bad start when opener Wasim Jaffer was out for a duck after edging a Brett Lee delivery to Clarke in the slips.

VVS Laxman and first-innings centurion Sachin Tendulkar both fell cheaply before Rahul Dravid, who made a battling 38, was given out caught behind by Adam Gilchrist off the bowling of Symonds when the ball clearly came off his pad.

There was more controversy when Sourav Ganguly was the sixth man to go when the umpires deemed an edge off a Lee ball carried to Clarke at second slip.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and India captain Anil Kumble stabilised the innings with a seventh-wicket stand of 48 before the former was trapped leg before wicket by Symonds.

Ponting was running out of ideas and, as a last resort, turned to Clarke. The move paid handsome dividends as the slow left-armer took three wickets in one incredible over.
