Aussies in control

Australia established a healthy 179-run lead on day two of the first Test against India after the tourists came up short in their first innings.

Responding to Australia's total of 343, India were dismissed for 196 as pace bowlers Stuart Clark and Brett Lee claimed four wickets apiece at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

First-innings centurion Matthew Hayden (22) and Phil Jaques (10) finished the day unbeaten as the hosts closed on 32 without loss.

The Aussies resumed on an overnight total of 337 for nine and added just six more runs before Clark was dismissed for 21.

India made a stuttering start to their innings, with openers Wasim Jaffer (four) and Rahul Dravid (five) dismissed before lunch - but Sachin Tendulkar's 48th Test half-century briefly steadied the ship.

Clark bowled Tendulkar for 62 via a thick bottom edge, and Sourav Ganguly (43) fell in similar fashion against Brad Hogg two wickets later.

By then Clark had also taken the wickets of Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni - both for ducks - in a three-ball burst that left the tourists reeling on 122 for six.

Clark ended the innings with figures of four for 28 off 15 overs, while Lee's four for 46 included his 250th Test wicket.

Lee is the sixth Australian to achieve the milestone, which arrived when India captain Anil Kumble (27) edged to wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist.

Lee also accounted for Jaffer, VVS Laxman (26) and Zaheer Khan (11).
