After dismissing the tourists for a first-innings total of 211, Australia captain Ricky Ponting enforced the follow-on with the Sri Lankans trailing by 340 runs.
Sri Lanka's hopes of reeling in Australia's mammoth first-innings declaration of 551 for four took a further hit with the losses of openers Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu early in their second innings to trail by 260 runs at stumps.
Brett Lee helped to bring Sri Lanka's first innings to an end by claiming four wickets for the loss of just 26 runs while Aussie debutant Mitchell Johnson took his first two Test scalps.
