Australia claim series win

Australia have completed a series win against South Africa after winning the second Test in Durban by 175 runs.

The hosts, needing an improbable 546 to win and level the best-of-three contest, finished on 370 for nine, with captain Graeme Smith unable to bat after fracturing his little finger.

South Africa started the final day on 244 for two but the early loss of Jacques Kallis for 93 effectively ended their hopes.

Peter Siddle and Simon Katich took three wickets each for the tourists, who have avenged their loss to the Proteas on home soil earlier this year.

Captain Ricky Ponting said afterwards: "I am extremely proud of the whole group.

"We had our backs to the wall coming here but got together as a group and decided, if we played well, we would give ourselves a chance.

"The series at home was close but we put our best foot forward over here and I am very proud.

"It's good to bounce back from a series loss and win one against a very good side. We did the same thing when we lost the Ashes to England in 2005. When they came to Australia, we beat them 5-0."

Having taken so much criticism for some below-par displays in the Australian summer, Ponting was quick to point out how quickly things can change.

"All of a sudden we look good again," he added with a smile. "Things can change for you very quickly. The sky is the limit for this side."
