Ponting, who turned 33 on Wednesday, hit an unbeaten 134 - his second successive century - to help set a target of 283 in the third one-day international at Hobart.
Despite a determined 75 from Scott Styris, Brad Hogg and Brett Lee claimed three wickets each as the Black Caps were dismissed for 168.
New Zealand made a good start - removing Michael Clarke, Matthew Hayden and Michael Hussey - but from then on Ponting and Andrew Symonds (52) took control of the match to add 114 and propel Australia to an imposing total.
New Zealand came in to bat in the afternoon but Lee dismissed openers Jamie How and Brendon McCullum to ensure the tourists were eight for two by the fifth over.
The hosts continued to pick up wickets and after Styris was bowled by Lee, Hogg wrapped up the innings by dismissing Mark Gillespie.
