Australia move into commanding lead

Michael Clarke and Andrew Symonds helped Australia to 248 for five at tea on the third day of the first Test against India.

Symonds racked up four fours and two sixes before he was removed lbw by Zaheer Khan with less than 10 minutes to the break, having amassed 44 runs.

Clarke, meanwhile, was unbeaten on 52 alongside Adam Gilchrist on one as Australia increased their lead to 395.

It leaves a tall task for India to win the Test, even if Australia lose their remaining wickets while failing to add a further run.

After making a solid start Michael Hussey fell for 36 when he edged to Sachin Tendulkar at first slip while Phil Jaques hit his 50 for the sixth consecutive Test innings but was dismissed immediately after reaching that mark following a return catch to Anil Kumble for 51.

Before lunch, Harbhajan Singh had taken the wicket of Ricky Ponting after the Australia captain was caught at first slip by Rahul Dravid for three while Matthew Hayden was dismissed in the 18th over after posting 47 runs.
