Avram won't take Terry for granted
04 January 2007
The centre-back took to the field at the Mestalla wearing a protective face mask after an operation to for a broken cheekbone, and played the whole match as Chelsea shrugged off their recent indifferent form to claim an impressive 2-1 victory.
When asked for his thoughts behind selecting Terry for the match, Grant said: "For me it was an easy decision to take. When you see John Terry you see a player who plays with all his heart, I don't know how many players can play with this injury but John Terry's very special."
He added: "He's a player with a big heart and I think that big players need to be an example to the other, and you cannot ask for a better example than this."
Grant also praised the contribution of striker Didier Drogba, who scored Chelsea's winning goal against Valencia to help the Blues climb to the top of Group B.
Drogba only recently returned to action following a knee injury, but there was little sign of that when the Ivory Coast international outpaced his marker to smash home Joe Cole's superb through-ball to earn Chelsea the points.
"Didier is a good striker and I don't think that is news," said Grant.
"He was injured but I was very happy with his attitude and his willingness to give everything for Chelsea football club."
