Award for Sanders

World 400 metres silver medallist Nicola Sanders has been voted the British Olympic Association Athlete of the Year.

Sanders, also winner of the European Indoor 400m title, received the accolade at the UK Athletics Awards ceremony held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.

The award was presented by former Olympic 400m gold medallist David Hemery with the criteria being 'to recognise the performance and commitment of an athlete who has proved the embodiment of the Olympic ideal'.

Sanders had a fantastic year in running a British indoor record and the world's fifth fastest time ever of 50.02 seconds when she won the European title in front of her home fans in Birmingham.

At the World Championships she improved her outdoor 400m time to 49.65secs when finishing just 0.04sec behind Christine Ohuruogu in a nailbiting final.

Sanders later ran the fastest ever British female 4x400m relay split of 48.76 secs on the final leg, taking the team to the bronze medal.
