It seemed Britain would return home with their tail between their legs but Glaswegian Baker overcame a rankings gap of nearly 200 places to beat world number 41 Agustin Calleri 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in the final match - giving the underdogs a consolation point in a 4-1 defeat.
Baker told BBC Sport: "We came down here for an unbelievably tough ask. I'd like to say a massive thank you to our captain, John."
"During the whole circumstances surrounding Andy Murray not coming, John hasn't faltered, he's been so positive, and there's no-one I'd rather have with me out on the court," he added.
It was the 21-year-old British number three's first victory in Davis Cup.
Earlier, Alex Bogdanovic came close to upsetting world number 50 Jose Acasuso but was just edged out in both sets, losing 7-5 7-5.
Lloyd's team face a play-off in September to preserve their World Group status, and he is confident British number one Andy Murray will return for that tie.
"I'm optimistic for the future," said Lloyd. "We would like Andy back for the next match that we'll play in September."
The 20-year-old withdrew from the team prior to the tie citing a knee injury but is due to play in an ATP tournament in Marseille, which starts on Monday.
