After winning the toss, New Zealand chose to put Bangladesh into bat first as they looked to exploit the conditions of the Dunedin pitch, which had come under some criticism in the build up to the Test.

And the decision to bowl first appeared to pay off as Bangladesh had lost their first wicket by the third over.

Junaid Siddique was out for one when he hit from a Chris Martin delivery into the hands of Stephen Fleming at first slip.

Habibul Bashar fared a little better at the crease as his big hitting ensured he racked up 23 runs before he was caught out by Brendon McCullum with the tourists 43 for two.

Martin completed his hat-trick of wickets when Mohammad Ashraful was dismissed lbw soon after and it looked as though Bangladesh would be in for a tough session.

But Tamim Iqbal and Shahriar Nafees steadied the ship somewhat to forge a 35-run partnership before the latter got a thick inside edge and the ball rolled onto the stumps.

At lunch Iqbal was unbeaten on 41 from 74 deliveries and was joined in the middle by Aftab Ahmed, who was yet to pick up a run.
