Barry the hero as Villa march on

Gareth Barry kept 10-man Aston Villa's Champions League charge on track in an explosive 2-1 win at Sunderland.

The Villa skipper smashed home an 80th-minute penalty, controversially awarded for substitute Paul McShane's challenge on Gabriel Agbonlahor, after Ashley Young had been sent off for a dreadful tackle on Dean Whitehead.

James Milner had earlier dragged the visitors back into the game with a 60th-minute equaliser after Danny Collins had given the home side the lead.

It took the home team just 11 minutes to get their noses in front, Collins powering in a thumping header from Carlos Edwards' free-kick.

Whitehead was denied a second goal by the feet of goalkeeper Brad Friedel with 26 minutes gone and Anton Ferdinand flashed a header wide from Edwards' corner two minutes later.

Villa finally got themselves back into the game on the hour as they launched a devastating counter-attack.

Barry and Agbonlahor combined to play Ashley Young into space down the right, and he left Nyron Nosworthy for dead before crossing to the far post.

Milner arrived at pace with Pascal Chimbonda in pursuit and the midfielder managed to bundle the ball home with his shoulder as the pair went to ground.

The game appeared to have changed again with 18 minutes remaining when Ashley Young lunged two-footed at Whitehead and was rightly shown a red card.

But Villa forced their way ahead when McShane was adjudged to have felled Agbonlahor inside the box and referee Mike Dean pointed to the spot.
