Barwick: Capello committed to England

Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick is convinced Fabio Capello is totally committed to the England cause after the 61-year-old Italian was confirmed as Steve McClaren's successor on Friday night.

With a contract until 2012, believed to be worth £6.5million a year but which is also thought to have a break clause after the 2010 World Cup, it is little wonder Capello announced his desire to coach England, although Barwick is in no doubt he has taken the job to restore England's fortunes rather than just to line his pockets.

"Sir Trevor Brooking and I were left in no doubt of his passion and commitment to bring that success to the England team," said Barwick. "He is a winner and his record over the last two decades speaks for itself."

He added: "At every club he has managed, Fabio has won the league title and I am delighted he has agreed to become England manager. When we set out to recruit the new manager, we said we were committed to appointing a world-class candidate. In Fabio Capello we have that man."

Once Jose Mourinho ruled himself out of the running last weekend, Capello, who will fly back to England for his public unveiling on Monday, was always the favourite to get the job.

With nine league titles on his impressive CV, plus a Champions League success with AC Milan, Capello's experience and quality is unquestioned.

Complaints about his nationality voiced by, among others Tony Adams and Steve Coppell, will only be enhanced by confirmation that four of Capello's long-time associates, all Italian, will form his coaching team.

Franco Baldini and Italo Galbiati will act as assistants, Massimo Neri is the new fitness coach, while Franco Tancredi will be goalkeeping coach, a position previously held by Ray Clemence, who remains with the FA on a full-time basis as head of the national development teams.

Brooking, who worked closely with Barwick throughout the recruitment process, will liaise with Capello over the appointment of an Englishman to his coaching staff.

Former captain Alan Shearer and current under-21 boss Stuart Pearce are among those being considered, although it is also possible the name of Watford's highly-rated manager Aidy Boothroyd will crop up if they are thinking of someone already in a job who could expand his experience for potential future employment.
