Bath fightback sends Sale out

Bath produced a stirring second-half fightback to bundle Sale out of the EDF Energy Cup with a 24-21 victory which keeps alive their own hopes of progressing in the competition.

The visitors found themselves 13-0 down after 25 minutes after Charlie Hodgson inspired the hosts into a commanding lead but the sinbinning of forward Brent Cockbain shortly before the break proved costly for Sale.

Stuart Hooper touched down for Bath to reduce the arrears and second-half scores from Shontayne Hape and Michael Stephenson put the visitors home and dry before Chris Bell's second try for Sale ensured a tense finale.

Meanwhile the Scarlets made a winning farewell to Stradey Park as they went to the top of Group D with a 27-0 demolition of Bristol.

After 129 years at Stradey, this was the west Wales region's last home match before they move two miles down the road to their new ground at Parc y Scarlets next month.

It was a comprehensive three-try win which was just missing one more touchdown for a bonus point.

Wasps edged to a 26-13 victory over Newcastle at Kingston Park while also securing a valuable bonus point.

Shaun Edwards will have been happy to see his side back to winning ways after their hammering at Leinster.

England head coach Martin Johnson however will not share his delight after Falcons centre Jamie Noon was carried off in the first half with his neck in a brace. RFU director of rugby Rob Andrew watched from the stand and saw Danny Cipriani come through unscathed.

It was not vintage Cipriani as he missed two relatively easy first-half kicks but he did manufacture a crucial second-half try for Tom Voyce.
