Batsmen put England in charge

England powered to a formidable first-innings total before declaring at tea on the third day against West Indies after their middle order all provided quickfire contributions in the second npower Test.

Having lost the entire second day to rain, England needed to make the most of the time available when they resumed the third morning at the Riverside on 302 for two.

That impetus was provided with Kevin Pietersen (49), Matt Prior (63) and Paul Collingwood (60 not out) all attempting to score quickly, while Alastair Cook hit a personal Test best 160 to help England declare on 569 for six.

It added up to another frustrating day for West Indies' attack, who were given an encouraging start by dismissing nightwatchman James Anderson in the seventh over of the day but struggled to restrict England's free-scoring batsmen.
