Bayern beckon for Bolton

Bolton chairman Phil Gartside described Bolton's UEFA Cup group as "fantastic" after the Trotters were drawn against German giants Bayern Munich.

As well as Bayern, the Bundesliga leaders, Bolton will take on Red Star Belgrade, who knocked out of the Champions League in the qualifying stage by Rangers, Portuguese side Braga and Aris Salonika of Greece.

Gartside told Sky Sports: "We all said Bayern Munich in the group would be fantastic, so we're all very happy."

He added: "Being greedy you want to play Bayern Munich at home, because you get a better TV deal from broadcasters.

"When you're playing a second-rate team from Macedonia and 20,000 people turn up it probably spells out that people are interested."

Gartside believes facing Bayern could provide a major boost to the Trotters' flagging season under new manager Sammy Lee.

"We've had a tough start," he said. "You're looking for signs and things which might start your season off and this could be a great fillip for everybody."
