Beckham makes MLS debut

David Beckham made his Major League Soccer debut as Luciano Emilio gave DC United a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Thursday.

Marc Burch assisted on Emilio's blast from 25 yards that slipped through the outstretched hands of leaping Galaxy goalkeeper Joe Cannon in the 27th minute.

With his 13th goal of the season, Emilio moved to the top of the MLS scoring charts.

Beckham elicited a flurry of flashbulbs from the crowd of 46,686 at RFK Stadium when he began stretching along the sideline during the 37th minute.

The crowd was the fourth-biggest for soccer in RFK Stadium history and the largest for an MLS game that was not part of a special doubleheader involving the US National Team.

Although a steady downpour began during the 54th minute, British superstar Beckham continued his warm-up drills, which kept suspense building.

Galaxy midfielder Kyle Martino received a red card and was dismissed in the 67th minute for spiking United midfielder Fred.

And as the rain subsided, Beckham entered the match in the 72nd minute, making his long-awaited MLS debut.

The England midfielder sent a long pass in the 87th minute to Landon Donovan, who was upended by Troy Perkins.

United's goalkeeper ran all the way to the top left corner of the 18-yard box to thrwart the scoring threat.
