Benjamin grabs semi-final berth

Great Britain's Tim Benjamin overcame a bad lane draw to secure his place in the 400metres semi-finals at the World Championships in Osaka.

The 24-year-old Belgrave Harrier, who has endured a torrid season through injury and also split with coach Colin Jackson last month, finished third in his heat (45.44 seconds).

"It was a tough heat and I am pleased to have done that from lane one," said Benjamin. "I am really pleased with my mental toughness."

He added: "When I saw the lane draw I thought luck was not on my side, but I was determined not to let it beat me and my coach played a big role in not letting it."

However, Croydon Harrier Martyn Rooney and UK champion Andrew Steele both missed out.

"It's disappointing for the other two guys, especially Andrew who has had an awesome year so far. But it is good for both of them to get the qualifying time for the Olympics so they don't have to worry about that."
