Berdych into last eight at BMW Open
04 January 2007
Second seed Berdych has dropped just nine of the 34 games he has contested at the clay court tournament, and improves his season record on the surface to 6-1.
The win moves him to within striking distance of a second semi-final berth in as many tournaments, after reaching the final four at last month's Monte Carlo Masters.
Berdych, who has not won on the tour since the Masters event in Paris in October 2005, will now face Frenchman Nicolas Devilder.
After ousting seventh seed Guillermo Canas in the first round, Devilder notched a 6-3 7-5 victory over local qualifier Tobias Summerer.
Another player that recorded a upset in the opening round, Sebastien Grosjean of France, rallied past Martin Vassallo Arguello of Argentina 2-6 6-3 6-4.
Grosjean, who toppled the top-seeded Tommy Haas in straight sets on Tuesday, will face another German, Philipp Kohlschreiber, in the last eight.
Kohlschreiber routed number five seed Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-1 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals for the second year running.
