Black Cats suffer Notts Co knockout

Craig Westcarr and Lee Hughes teamed up to dump Sunderland out of the FA Cup as League One Notts County claimed a 2-1 Barclays Premier League scalp.

Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet dropped Westcarr's fifth-minute cross into his own net after colliding with team-mate Kieran Richardson to hand the visitors the perfect start.

A much-changed Sunderland's response was insipid and Hughes made sure 15 minutes from time when, after Mignolet had saved his initial effort, he fired home from the rebound to make Darren Bent's 81st-minute penalty irrelevant.

Mohamed Diame netted twice as Wigan booked their place in the fourth round with a 3-2 victory over Hull for the second successive season.

The midfielder scored the only goal of a low key first half in the 21st minute before teenage striker Callum McManaman grabbed his first for the Latics 11 minutes after the break.

The game really came to life in the final quarter of an hour as substitute Nick Barmby netted twice either side of Diame's second but there was not to be a final twist as the visitors held on.

Kyle Walker and Marc Albrighton eased the pressure on Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier with goals in a 3-1 third-round win at Sheffield United.

Jamie Ward's penalty gave the Blades some hope in the second half but Stiliyan Petrov's late goal saw Villa through.
