The 29-year-old missed the first drawn Test against the tourists after aggravating his troublesome left ankle but was named in Peter Moores' 13-man squad on Tuesday in a bid to give him as much time as possible to prove his fitness.

Flintoff had played for Lancashire in Sunday's Friends Provident Trophy match against Yorkshire as a specialist batsman, but Moores had made it clear the player must also be fit to bowl.

He was put through his paces in a net session on Wednesday but was not considered to be showing enough improvement to be retained for further assessment on Thursday.

Instead he will return to Lancashire for rehabilitation.
