Blues shoot down Lampard reports

Frank Lampard will not miss the start of the new season after Chelsea denied the midfielder had suffered a broken toe.

The England star has not missed a single training session since he collected the minor knock during their pre-season tour of America and is almost certain to be included in Jose Mourinho's side for Sunday's Community Shield showdown with Manchester United.

A Chelsea spokesperson confirmed: "Contrary to speculation, Frank has only suffered a minor injury - sustained over three weeks ago whilst training in Los Angeles. The injury has not required any painkilling injections nor affected Frank's ability to play or to take part in any one of Chelsea's training sessions."

Meanwhile, Brazilian defender Alex has been granted a work permit. The defender, who opted to fly home last Sunday even though he was cleared to enter the country, will now return to Britain to discuss personal terms with the club and undergo a medical with a view to completing a transfer from PSV Eindhoven.

A Chelsea spokesperson said: "At a hearing, Alex was granted a work permit. He still has to agree personal terms with Chelsea Football Club and have a medical."

The signing of Alex will take Chelsea's summer arrivals to five following Steve Sidwell, Florent Malouda, Claudio Pizarro and Tal Ben Haim.
