BMW'S F1 future in doubt

BMW's future in Formula One is in doubt amid speculation the team are withdrawing from the sport at the end of this season.

The German car manufacturer have called an emergency press conference at their Munich headquarters on Wednesday - and it is believed the company may reveal they are ending their involvement in F1.

The invitation to the press conference gave "current developments in motor sport" as the reason for the event.

The presence of key figures such as Dr Norbert Reithofer, the chairman of the BMW board, Dr Klaus Draeger, the director for development, and Mario Theissen, BMW's motorsport director, suggests the announcement will be a significant one.

BMW had hoped to challenge strongly for the championship this year, however, the current car has fallen short of expectations and the team are currently lying in eighth place in the constructors' championship.

In February Theissen stressed the team's form had not altered the BMW board's commitment to the sport.

His positive vibe came after Toyota team principal Tadashi Yamashina revealed the Japanese giant came close to following Honda's lead and pulling out of the sport.

Theissen maintained BMW's investment in F1 was justifiable for the manufacturer in the current economic climate.
