BOA face protracted Chambers fight

British Olympic chiefs may have to grit their teeth for a new legal battle even if they defeat Dwain Chambers in the High Court today.

The sprinter's fight for a place in the British team for Beijing could go to the Court of Appeal and then even the House of Lords if the British Olympic Association (BOA) win his High Court case.

Chambers, who won the 100metres at the Olympic trials last weekend, is seeking an injunction against the BOA's bylaw that imposes a lifetime ban on any athlete who fails a drugs test.

The sprinter was banned by UK Athletics for two years in 2003 after testing positive for the designer steroid THG and missed the Athens Games.

The International Olympic Committee only ban drug cheats for one Olympic Games and there will be other athletes in Beijing who are there despite having served bans for doping offences.

Chambers claims the ban is equivalent to a restraint of trade and the BOA refused to comment ahead of the High Court hearing.

BOA chairman Lord Moynihan said: "Clearly there are lots of consequences to this case but I don't believe it's wise or appropriate to comment on it before it goes to court."

Chambers' case is not a full challenge to the bylaw so the result would not necessarily apply to any other athlete who has been affected the BOA's lifetime ban.

Meanwhile, former 110metres hurdles world record holder Colin Jackson believes Chambers should be banned for life from athletics.

He told The Sun: "Dwain Chambers' success at the Olympic trials hasn't changed my mind in any way - I still don't think he should be allowed to go to the Olympic Games. I think these people should have a complete life ban. He knew the rules of our sport and the British Olympic Association prior to taking drugs and he took the risk."
