Boks overpower England again

England suffered a second-half mauling at Loftus Versfeld after their dreams of a shock victory were smashed by South Africa, who ran out 55-22 winners.

Wing Dan Scarborough's interception try, converted by skipper Jonny Wilkinson - who finished with 17 points, gave an under-strength England a shock 19-17 interval lead. But then their world caved in as the Springboks cut loose after the break.

Bryan Habana and Pierre Spies both grabbed a brace of tries, with Ricky Januarie, Schalk Burger, Bakkies Botha and Percy Montgomery - who finished with an 18-point haul - also touching down. Fly-half Butch James kicked the final conversion.

England's loss came a week after they suffered a record 58-10 defeat in Bloemfontein, and coach Brian Ashton slammed his men for their second-half capitulation.

He told Sky Sports 1: "First half, 17-6 down, and then we fought back - I thought then we could give them a game.

"But they turned up the pressure and certain areas of our game didn't function.

"The energy levels dropped quite dramatically and people were falling off tackles. That was one of the big differences.

"You expect international players to play for the whole 80 minutes.

"One or two players showed that they are capable of competing at this level - but overall I'm disappointed."
