Bolt smashes record to take gold

Usain Bolt smashed the world record as he decimated his rivals to claim 100metres gold in the Beijing Olympics.

Bolt got off to a good start, pulled clear of the field in the middle part of the race and eased down in the closing stages with the race won.

He shaved three hundredths of a second off his own world record in a blistering time of 9.69 seconds and looks capable of going even quicker.

Trinidad's Richard Thompson claimed the silver medal in 9.89, narrowly edging out Walter Dix of the United States, who came home in 9.91.

Churandy Martina of the Netherlands Antilles set a national record as he crossed the line just outside the medal positions in 9.93.

Bolt's fellow countryman Asafa Powell finished in a disappointing fifth place just ahead of Michael Frater, also of Jamaica, in 9.95 as six men went under 10 seconds.

"I came here to prove that I'm the best in the world, and I did that," said Bolt.

"I wasn't worried about the time. I just came here to win."
