Boonen secures sixth-stage success
14 January 2007
Simpson was the first Englishman to wear the yellow jersey and in 1963 became the first British winner of the World Cycling Championships, but died from heat exhaustion 40 years ago to the day while riding in the 1967 Tour.
Wiggins launched his breakaway at the two-kilometres mark, and held a tour-high maximum advantage of 17mins 30secs in a lead which lasted until seven kilometres from the end when he was caught by the peloton. The race ended in a sprint finish which Boonen won, coming through on the outside to edge ahead of Oscar Freire.
Freire was runner-up for the second time in two days, with Erik Zabel third, while Fabian Cancellara and Sylvain Chavanel held onto the yellow and polka-dot jerseys respectively.
