Boro confirm Aliadiere swoop

Middlesbrough on Wednesday confirmed they have sealed the signing of Arsenal striker Jeremie Aliadiere on a four-year contract for an initial £2million.

The 24-year-old agreed a the deal after undergoing a medical on Teesside and will officially become a Boro player on July 1.

Arsenal will receive an initial £2million for the Rambouillet-born frontman, who becomes manager Gareth Southgate's second summer signing following Jonathan Woodgate's £7million arrival from Real Madrid.

With Fenerbahce striker Tuncay Sanli due to have his medical this week after Boro agreed a deal to bring him to the Barclays Premier League, Southgate has moved swiftly to plug the gap left by Mark Viduka.

The Australian, the club's leading scorer last season with 19 goals, turned down a contract extension to join derby rivals Newcastle.

In the wake of the 31-year-old's departure, the Teessiders have targeted younger players with pace and they could yet step up their interest Manchester United's Alan Smith when he returns from holiday.

Southgate has also lost Malcolm Christie and Danny Graham, who were released at the end of the last campaign, leaving him with just Dong-Gook Lee and Aiyegbeni Yakubu.

With speculation mounting Nigeria international Yakubu could be available - former club Portsmouth are reportedly stepping up their pursuit - there has been a great deal of uncertainty around the Riverside Stadium.

However, Aliadiere's capture and Tuncay's imminent arrival have strengthened Southgate's hand and while his priorities now to strengthen the right side of defence and midfielder it would be no surprise if there was further movement to bolster the attack.
