Boro secure third-round spot

Middlesbrough swept League One Yeovil aside 5-1 to power into the third round of the Carling Cup.

The Somerset side were outclassed by their Premier League hosts in all departments at the Riverside Stadium and trailed 3-1 at half-time after goals from Mido, Didier Digard and Jeremie Aliadiere.

Boro maintained their intensity well into the second half and claimed further goals through Marvin Emnes and Adam Johnson.

Stoke put their recent dismal Carling Cup record behind them to inflict a 3-2 defeat on Cheltenham thanks to second-half goals from Glenn Whelan, Richard Cresswell and Jon Parkin.

Crewe caused a surprise after they hung on to record a 2-1 home win over Bristol City, while Championship side Crystal Palace also succumbed to League One opposition after Leeds thrashed them 4-0 at Elland Road.

Jonathan Douglas and Jermaine Beckford gave Gary McAllister's side a two-goal lead at the break before Luciano Becchio and Enoch Showunmi rounded off the win in the second half.

Chris McCann's 12th-minute strike and a brace from Martin Paterson gave Burnley a comfortable 3-0 win over Oldham at Turf Moor.

Derby midfielder Paul Green gave his side a 1-0 win over Preston at Deepdale.

Jorge Ledesma hit a second-half hat-trick after Damion Stewart's first-half opener to help QPR ease to a 4-0 win over Carlisle.

Cardiff made hard work of their clash against MK Dons but secured a place in the third-round draw with a 2-1 win at Ninian Park.
