Borthwick in the dark

Despondent England captain Steve Borthwick has had "no contact" with the British and Irish Lions about being put on the official stand-by list.

Borthwick was "very disappointed" to be one of three Six Nations captains left out of Ian McGeechan's squad for this summer's assault on world champions South Africa. Furthermore, he has had no phone call, indicating the Lions management do not consider him among the leading 67 players in the British Isles.

"I have had no contact," said Borthwick. "I was very disappointed not to be selected. There is no escaping from that fact."

The Lions management have drawn up an extensive list of up to 30 injury reserves with each player to be informed they are on stand-by and required to sign a contract.

Cardiff Blues fly-half Nicky Robinson revealed over the weekend that he received a phone-call from Lions attack coach Rob Howley to let him know he was on the waiting list.

Lions and England scrum coach Graham Rowntree explained that Borthwick had been overlooked from the 37-man squad because the tourists decided to pick a pack full of "beasts".

Borthwick returned to form in England's RBS 6 Nations victories over France and Scotland after the more abrasive Simon Shaw had been installed alongside him in the second row. Shaw made it into the party along with similarly physical locks as Nathan Hines and Donncha O'Callaghan.

Borthwick, who was speaking at an event organised by Powerade, said: "The British and Irish Lions is a fantastic team with a fantastic history behind it. There are very few opportunities to go for that and I am very disappointed.

"I have worked as hard as I possibly can to help my country be successful. With that I hoped to get selection for the British and Irish Lions.

"It has not worked out like that. The selectors have decided not to select me. That is their decision."
