Borthwick makes discipline vow

England captain Steve Borthwick has promised his country's jaded fans that the disciplinary problems which have dogged the team are a thing of the past.

In the nine Tests since Borthwick was appointed skipper, England have had 13 players sent to the sin-bin and paid heavily for a high penalty count in defeats to Australia, Wales and Ireland.

Team manager Martin Johnson's patience with England's indiscipline finally snapped after they conceded 18 penalties and received two more yellow cards during the 14-13 Ireland loss 11 days ago, and Borthwick said: "Martin Johnson has been forthright with us, he was rightly furious. I know the supporters have heard this all before, but we must immediately get a grip on our discipline."

He added: "I want England supporters to know there is an incredible sense of frustration amongst all the players following our narrow loss to Ireland."

Johnson's explosion of anger witnessed in the stands when substitute Danny Care was sin-binned against the Irish for a mindless barge is understood to have continued into the changing room.

The players were put through tough conditioning sessions last week as punishment, doing 18 repetitions to hammer home the number of penalties England conceded in Ireland.

Borthwick added: "The simple truth is yet again we threw away our chance to win a game through our own lack of discipline and the amount of penalties we gave away.

"If we had not had players in the sin bin or conceded so many penalties I genuinely believe we could have come away from Dublin with a win."

Preparations for the RBS 6 Nations clash against France at Twickenham on Sunday have, meanwhile, been dealt a blow with the news that winger Paul Sackey is ruled out by injury.

The Wasps wing was on Tuesday released back to his club, having been unable to train with England at their Surrey base. Sackey is struggling with a lower calf muscle injury that forced him off at Croke Park.
