Botham awarded knighthood

Ian Botham has received a knighthood in the Queen's birthday honours in recognition of his charity fundraising as much as his services to cricket.

Botham, 51, to become Sir Beefy, has raised over £10m for leukaemia research and the Teenage Cancer Trust through 11 long-distance sponsored walks.

The former all-rounder said: "The most important thing has been the awareness (of leukaemia) we have achieved."

The enduring success of Wimbledon has been recognised with a CBE for chairman of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club Tim Phillips.

British Lions rugby union prop Graham Price, a member of the legendary Wales side of the 1970s, receives an MBE.

Wales's former world snooker champion Terry Griffiths receives an OBE, and Southampton yachtswoman Denise Caffar has been handed an MBE.

Scot Jim Leishman admits he was left "humbled and proud" by his MBE in the Queens birthday honours list when he was honoured for services to sport.

Director of football at Dunfermline, he has been involved in the game for almost 40 years, having also served the Pars both as a player and manager.

He said: "I can't believe it. The first thing that comes into your mind is who recommended me? Why me?"

Tommy Gilmour revealed the letter informing him that he had been awarded an MBE reduced him to tears. Gilmour, promoter of 24 world title fights, said: "I was ecstatic - and I still am. It's better than any knockout that I've ever been involved in."
