Boycott: KP should lead one-day side

Geoff Boycott has backed Kevin Pietersen to become England's new one-day captain following Michael Vaughan's decision to step down.

Vaughan resigned on Monday after four years in the post - although he will remain as the captain of the Test side - and Paul Collingwood is favourite to be named as his successor when the one-day squad is announced on Friday.

"They will probably pick Collingwood but Pietersen is one you should think about," Boycott told BBC Five Live. "He is different and original - you could say outlandish - he plays in a different way."

He added: "We don't know anything about Collingwood's captaincy, we don't know anything about Pietersen as captain - I don't think any of them have ever done it.

"Take a punt - which one do you go for?"

The Yorkshireman believes England should take a calculated risk, saying: "Pietersen is a very interesting individual.

"When you talk to him outside the batting scenario he's very easy, laid back, polite, pleasant.

"But when he is in the middle he is a highly-motivated competitor - almost like Viv Richards - I'm going to take you on.

"He'll cock up like he did the other night but you ask the kids around the country who do they want to watch? They want to watch Pietersen bat and watch (Cristiano) Ronaldo at Manchester United because he excites them."
