Brabants adds bronze to gold

Great Britain's Tim Brabants has won bronze in the Olympic 500metre single kayak final.

The 31-year-old doctor finished behind Australian Ken Wallace and world champion Adam van Koeverden in a thrilling sprint for the line.

Only four tenths of a second separated the three medallists as Wallace won gold with a strong finish. Brabants adds bronze to the Olympic title he won on Friday in the 1000m final.

Eight years ago in Sydney, Brabants became the first British canoeist to stand on the Olympic podium when he won bronze in the 1,000m single kayak.

He finished fifth in Athens before taking 18 months off to pursue his medical career in Jersey.

Since returning to competition in 2006, Brabants has been European champion for three straight years and double world silver medallist.

"I had no idea whether I was first, second or ninth until I crossed the line and looked across, I had no idea where I finished. I looked at the board and it said I was silver then it dropped me down to bronze.

"But I have to be happy. I came out to these Olympics with the hope of getting two medals - one of them gold and that is what I have done. It has been fantastic. I feel very lucky to be here."

Lucy Wainright finished seventh in the women's K1 500m final and was disappointed not improve on her position from the Athens Olympics.

"It went OK. It wasn't my best race. I came here wanting to go one better than Athens and I came away with the same. I am sure later down the track I will realise what I have achieved but at the moemnt I am disappointed," she said.
