The Great Britain international was found guilty of a reckless high tackle on Leeds prop Jamie Thackray in Sunday's controversial engage Super League clash at the Millennium Stadium.

It is Newton's second ban of the season having already served a two-match suspension for striking St Helens' Jon Wilkin.

Newton also sat out the first two months of last season after being handed a 10-match ban for illegal tackles on St Helens pair Sean Long and Lee Gilmour in what turned out to be his last match for Wigan in September 2005.

If the ban is upheld, he will miss this Sunday's Challenge Cup fifth-round tie at Wakefield and Super League games against Huddersfield and Harlequins.
